About ChinKumba
Chin-Kumba is a wollof phrase originated from the SENE-GAMBIAN region of WEST AFRICA. Praising the cooking pot traditionally, in the WOLLOF dialect, comes the phrase CHIN-KUMBA. Which simply translates to woman and her cooking pot. This Three legged pot is a great traditional cooking pot, where tasty and healthy recipes are created. We encourage and promote healthy eating and well-being.
Traditionally during the golden days women are referred to as KUMBA, and men also referred to as SAMBA. Those days in the Sene-Gambian region is only the Kumba that cook in the homes. Another meaning for KUMBA In the wollof dialects is when a person did well, or do great, people often say KUMBA!! to express goodness. WOMAN POWER👍🏿
During the golden days, these pots where very useful for the TALIBEH, kids that learn the Quran, the black condensed smoke accumulated around the outer part of the pot is what they scrape and make homemade ink called DAA in Wollof. This homemade ink is then used to write on their individual wooden boards call ALUWA.
Today, we are still hearing KUMBA and SAMBA. KUMBA AM NDEY, KUMBA AMOUT NDEY, in stories and expressions. And yet still, this present generation women who are mothers, Grand mothers , aunties and sisters mostly do the home cooking. Even the griots have sing songs about CHIN-KUMBA. one of the famous song is “YA DI CHIN-KUMBA SOR TARKUT NJABORT GI DEM BALAFA”. Which basically means EVERY FAMILY LOVES TO SEE KUMBA PUTTING COOKING POT ON FIRE”, otherwise……🙆🏾♀️🤦🏽♀️
